The first issue of the Indiana Journal of Earth Sciences (IJES) is now available online. Changing from our traditional publication formats (Special Reports, Occasional Papers, etc.) to an open-access journal allows us to offer our products to a greater number of people at no cost to them. It also lets other scientists use and build more easily on IGWS research.

Chief editor of the journal, Lee Florea, said, "In a world where the availability of data drive institutional relevancy and where the definition of a publication has become fluid, the open-access model of the IJES will be a vehicle to present a wide range of peer-reviewed literature openly without subscription fees."

While the journal serves as the primary outlet for scholarly communication of the IGWS including reports, maps, GIS coverages, and StoryMaps, it has a broad mission to publish Earth science research about Indiana and the surrounding region by other authors. We welcome and encourage geologists outside the Survey to submit papers to the journal. You can find our publication policies and other information on the journal site.

Here at the IGWS, we take our commitment to open access seriously. For the past year, we have been scanning and creating archival PDFs of the maps, reports, and popular literature that previously were available for some cost through our IGWS Bookstore. This work is time-consuming and is still continuing, but if you browse through our publications, you will find that many are now available as PDF downloads at no cost.
